Whom to Inform and By When
Inform your family, spouse, or legal guardian about your decision. They must confirm your wish during a medical emergency or post-death declaration. The sooner they know, the easier it is for your pledge to be honored.
1. Living Donor Criteria:
You can be a living donor if you meet the following:
1. Age: 18–65 years old
2. Relationship: Ideally a close relative (spouse, sibling, parent, child), though altruistic
donations may be considered
3. Health:
4. Physically and mentally healthy
5. No chronic illnesses like uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease, kidney/liver failure, or
active infections
6. Blood Group Compatibility with the recipient
7. Psychological Evaluation to confirm voluntary consent and understanding
8. Medical Screening: Includes tests for infections (HIV, Hepatitis), organ function
tests, and general fitness
Organs typically donated by living donors: One kidney, part of liver, lung lobe, or bone marrow
You can donate organs after death if:
1. Age: Usually under 70 (depends on organ type and hospital policy)
2. Brain Dead or Cardiac Dead: Certified by a medical board under Indian Transplant
Law
3. Consent: Family or legal guardian must confirm consent (even if the person is a
registered donor)
4. No Contraindications:
5. No active cancer (except some treatable forms)
6. No active HIV/AIDS (with few exceptions depending on protocols)
7. No severe infections that can be transmitted
Organs and tissues that can be donated post-death: Heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, intestines, corneas, skin, bone, tendons, heart valves.
Who Cannot Donate:
1. People with active tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS (with exceptions), metastatic cancer,
or sepsis
2. Those with uncontrolled mental health conditions preventing informed consent (for living donors)
3. Minors (under 18 years) and those without capacity to legally consent
